Not another post about Fifty Shades of Grey

I’ve been pondering, nay wrestling with myself over whether or not I “should” read E.L James’s Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

Maybe I shouldn’t on principle – by various accounts its provenance is close to plagirism, it’s poorly researched, less well written and even less well edited.

Maybe I should because of all of the above reasons to enable me to put on my serious face and pontificate about it in some way or add my review to the many others.

In the end it came down to this, I’m too lazy to read a book that I’ll not really care about.

I’ve read the reveiws and come to the conclusion that its probably no better or worse in style or content than the Jackie Collins novels that my friends and I read as teenagers, complete with corner’s of pages missing where they’d be turned down so many times to indicate the sex scenes.  In the end the books popularity will wane, the writer will, I hope, invest her royalties wisely and live a long and happy life, and everyone will move on to a new book.  I’m fairly sure the publisher nor the writer will miss my cut of the however much it is.

I was going to write more but the phone rang and I had a conversation with a friend about teenage depression and forgot how I was going to end the post.  That’s life for you.

Thanks for reading,

Cybher conference: innovative and inspirational

I met Sian To, the organiser, last year and have kept in touch on and off via Twitter and email throughout the year.  In that time she has been kind enough to lend me her brain to pick when I was creating Eroticon and asked me to speak on a panel about sex blogging for her, I’d like to think we’re friends, but I’m still learning about her and from her and I hope that continues for a long time.

I’ve been to several conferences in 2011 and Cybher was far above any of them in terms of content, how it was delivered and all round quality and attention to detail.  At various conferences last year I felt I was PR fodder or that I was sitting through sessions that were extended adverts for someone’s business. I want to go to conferences and learn,  be inspired and even if the content is familiar to me have it reaffirm my ideas and inspire me forward.

I want a conference to be challenging, inspiring and fun in equal measure.  It’s a lot to ask but not too much to expect, Sian and her team pulled it off.  Cybher felt relevant, contemporary and current.  There were some glitches and parts where my interest or energy waned but they didn’t overwhelm my positive experience of the day.

Here is my day in Thank Yous:

Thank you to Annie at Love All Blogs for asking me the question:

“I worry that if I write about sex then I’ll just be adding to the exploitative sex industry” (or words to that effect)

I understand where she’s coming from here, but if you don’t have authentic voices that represent themselves talking about sex then you’re leaving the field open to the traditional voices that will portray the sex they want and approve of and not the sex you have.  My blog and my work setting up Eroticon is a part of the sex industry, I am not willing to let other people I don’t respect speak for me on this or any other matter.

Thank you to Sam and Leanne at The High Tea Cast for making podcasting seem dazzlingly easy.  It made me want to get to grips with podcasting, but it also made me want a Mac so I could have the “pretty” sound editing programme not boring old Audacity.  A related thank you to Ryan Duggins for being a good sport –  you can find out why here.

Thank you to Mario from Someone Once Told Me.  You’ll have to wait and see the quote I chose for my SOTMpic.

Thank you to Cathy Presland for letting me ask so many questions.

Thank you to Lori Smith for sharing the stage with me and for letting me ramble on, sorry if I got a bit carried away.

Thank you to everyone that came to the erotic blogging session and talked to me throughout the day.  What I long to read are blogs that spoke about every part of a person’s life, including sex and sexuality.  I’m going to try over on my personal blog to speak more openly and lead by example.

Finally, thank you to Sian and her team, Cybher made me want to do more, better.

To read more about the day and the experiences that other people had head over to the conference site and browse through the blogs in the post conference link up.

I can’t.  I’ll make it up to you.

How?  Perhaps there is some glue that fixes the cracks of disappointement, some anaesthetic that dulls the pain of let down?

I promise.

To what?  To fuck me, to love me when its convenient? How can you promise to a lie?

The bit on the side that’s squeezed in-between, the lie he lies with.

And  maybe I’m the sucker punch I don’t see coming, the sickness knotted in my stomach that I allow to take the place of food, of feeling.

I know what I should do, but can I?

To cut out the cause of pain, I’d have no pain, but what would I have?

A hole

A space.

An empty.

A lie.
